Where’s God? — #1 Street Corners

A BustedHalo video feature

by Bill McGarvey and Marc Adams

Faith, spirituality and religion are too often looked upon as the province of “experts” who spend all their time in places of worship. At BustedHalo.com we frequently hear from readers who desperately want to explore their spiritual questions but feel alienated from traditional faith communities. The fact of the matter is that the experience of sacredness is as unique and personal as our fingerprints, but we sometimes fail to recognize these moments as God’s way of speaking to us in our everyday lives.

“Where’s God?” is our attempt to look more imaginatively at the movement of grace in each of our lives and chronicle the countless different ways God is at work. It also marks our first foray into the YouTube universe (youtube.com/bustedhalovideo). We hope that this new video feature (BustedVideo!?!), in which associate editor Jeff Guhin describes his experience of God outside the walls of Church, will inspire others to realize that it doesn’t take an “expert” to see God’s presence in their own lives.

We want to hear from you…
We hope to shoot more segments in the near future, so we encourage readers to share where God is for them below.

Though I don’t have kids myself, I often feel closest to God when I’m babysitting or spending time with my roommates’ toddler. Kids have such pure joy and innocence and I remember Jesus’ words “for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” when I’m around them.

I find God in two places, routinely. The first place is when I am rocking my youngest daughter to sleep. In her angelic, innocent little face–so trusting, so perfect, so peaceful, so beautiful–I see God in the miracle of life, and in the blessings that He as bestowed on my wife and I.

The second place is…the grocery store! Seriously. Dozens and dozens of people–old, young, single, married, abled, disabled, wealthy, poor–all mixed together doing something that we all need to do to survive: finding food. There are few places in America that are as democratic as our local Market Basket. Often times, it looks like the United Nations in our grocery store, too: people from all sorts of cultures and countries and races, speaking a Tower of Babel-like variety of languages. Old people creeping along with walkers, young moms with crying babies, folks down on their luck looking for bargains, affluent people loading up on shrimp and steak…the grocery store is a microcosm of our world, and I often look across this sea of humanity and think, “This is where God is.”

Honestly.

I like the video and I”m excited about this series, btw.

Among other places I feel God’s presence, I feel him when I see people interact with one another in some sort of personal moment. Like the other day, I was waiting in the lobby of an apartment complex when I woman came downstairs with a wallet in her hand. Shortly after, another woman came in through the front doors and greeted the first woman with an excited, “Hi, are you (name)??” They were so gracious to one another, yet barely new each other, I could tell. I realized that the one lady had found her wallet and they were meeting to return it.

When strangers do nice things for each other, and I’m lucky enough to witness and notice it, that’s when I see God.
