When I'm working the hardest I need to get the most sleep. Eight hours at night, for sure, plus little naps in the middle of the afternoon. I know it sounds crazy, but when I wake up after a short nap, I feel so much more centered and productive!

Great piece, Phil — and I totally agree. I've struggled with a lack of sleep since I was a child. Unfortunately, my Dad was a night owl, and he let me stay up with him all hours of the night. When I left home at an early age, I continued that pattern, and I've stayed up ever since. I have a fantasy that one day I'm going to start sleeping correctly and discover an alternative reality; that I'll have a before and after story to tell. This is extremely important topic for those of us who seek and want a serene and useful life.

Hi Phil,

Thank you very much for this fantastic article. Every freaking day, day in and day out, for decade after decade. What's up with that?

Interesting, and I find it hard to argue, since I turn into an idiot zombie with a seriously bad attitude when I don’t get enought sleep.

On the other hand, it looks to me like traditional monasticism, specifically the Liturgy of the Hours, is all about interrupted sleep. I also know from experience that when I am sufficiently rested, I am more in tune with the Spirit in my day. I sometimes wonder how many kind words have been suppressed by the weary heart? In the same way I think of how many aggressive jibes have found their mark via my sleep deprived mind? Phil, thank you for this piece. I will try to disengage in some of my mindless activity late at night and engage in sleeps re-creation activity. After all, God did rest at the end of all that work of creation. And, it was deemed to be good.

I recall Jesus sleeping through a storm as the apostles watched the sea rage.
I also know from experience that when I am sufficiently rested, I am more in tune with the Spirit in my day.
I sometimes wonder how many kind words have been suppressed by the weary heart? What did He do? Seems to me He stayed up late and prayed. A lot.Sleep deprivation does not necessarily equate to reuced spiritual fitness.

How about following Jesus? What did He do?
