I join in congratulating our new President-elect. I think we can all recognize the historical significance of this event. However, I seriously doubt anyone would be congratulating Sarah Palin being the first female vice president or, say, if Mitt Romney had won the Republican nomination, the first Mormon president. This all comes down to ideology, so let’s not kid ourselves too much on the matter.

Our church leadership in America tied its hands over this. Now the bishops are issuing a strongly worded document about President-elect Obama and his stances on life issues. They’re talking about excommunication, etc. I think, unfortunately, this is a matter of “too little, too late”. Obama’s viewpoints on the issue of abortion is well known. We as Christians have to decide whether we want a world without war and poverty, where people have access to health care, whether we want an end to abortion, or if we want the Federal government to do it for us. Because if we decide on the latter, then the hard truth lies with an old maxim: what the feds can give us, the feds can also take away.

Dumb question but…

What are WE doing to end abortion? How many unwed mothers did we take into our homes even though it stretched us financially? How many pregnancy crisis centers have we volunteered at–or do we even know where they are?

We are not exonerated from playing a part in making abortion illegal simply by voting for someone who is what we might consider the lesser of two intrinsic evils. Rather, we need to make sure that politicians see us as people who are really committed to making abortion not merely illegal but a less attractive option–and most of us have done nothing in that regard.

It’s interesting how this Jesuit author writes in his November 5th comments about the hope inspired in many of his students by Obama’s election, but remains silent on hope for the unborn. Do his students not care about the unborn? If so, then say so. Does he think abortion is not important because of Obama’s other attrributes? If so, then say so. Even if he thinks Obama brings hope for peace, opportunity, freedom and justice for all (except the unborn), don’t ignore the abortion issue. Nathan’s post on November 14th reads “There is more to “life” than abortion” is interesting. Not so for those that are aborted. He also writes “Making it illegal won’t stop it from happening”. Should that be how we decide what is legal and illegal? If that is the test, what then would be made illegal? Should child abuse be legal because it’s my child and, anyway, making it illegal won’t prevent it from happening?

The man who will be President has charmed and mesmerized those who want Change….but at what cost? A society that overlooks the killing of the unborn has no future.

It really disappoints me to see that all people seem to care about is abortion. Not war, not the economy, not that a black man could be president when only 50 years ago people in white hoods were taking black men away and killing them. There is more to “life” than abortion. Making it illegal won’t stop it from happening. As a nation we need to go out there and prevent the ACTUAL causes of abortion. Let’s teach teens about birth control. Let’s face reality. A teenager NEVER listen to “just don’t do it.” Let’s pick our nation up from religious radicalism. Just remember my fellow Christians. The devil is everywhere, even in the church…..don’t let yourself be fooled.

I can’t disagree with this article more. Hope has been the buzzword for this campaign. There is no hope in a nation that sacrifices it’s unborn children.

I give President Elect Obama the respect due to him as the office He has achieved demands it. What a great thing he has accomplished to be the first black man to come into the powerful position in the world.

But that power is what scares me. The facts are simple.
President Elect Obama has the most radical pro-abortion agenda in history. We must give him respect as president but as Catholics we should and we MUST challenge him in his desire to pass the Freedom of Choice Act.

Thank you Craig! We as Christians and Catholics have a responsibility to uphold life, first and foremost. We have serious work to do in our faith communities to help our brothers and sisters understand the importance of protecting the sanctity of life. I am saddened that there seems to be a disconnect in this generation, there is a lot of work to do. St. Paul, pray for us!

Whilst this election screams out possibility, it does not outweigh or shadow Obama’s position on Abortion and the Right for Life. I think as Catholics we need to understand that. Where have our values gone?
It is a great thing we elected an African American, but it is a sad day for Christians, especially with Obama announcing he plans to move forward with the FOCA.
