I would also highly recommend Christopher West's book Theology of the Body for a better understanding of the church's teaching and reasons for prohibiting contraceptives and encouraging NFP.

I only skimmed this article but I don't believe the author mentioned that although many Catholic are unfortunly giving into contraceptives, using contraceptives is still considered a mortal (or deadly) sin within our Catholic faith.

Vanessa-- with this method of NFP, it doesn't matter if your cycle is irregular one month because you track your fertility signs each month. With the charting, you begin to see patterns emerge, but you can also see when something is a little different, too. My cycle isn't the same each month, so I have to pay attention to my fertility signs and I can't just rely on the calendar.

What happens with your cycle when you are stressed out? I mean life isn't always easy with managing work and married life. How can you really find a cycle that works with so many things going on that cause different effects on your body? Also do other medicines impact your body - i.e. allergy medicines?

My wife and I have used it for 27 years and find it to be a blessing in our marriage. I'm so glad that the Catholic Church remains faithful to this teaching. This past month my oldest daughter (who will be married in June 09) took the classes from the Couple to Couple League with her future husband.

This article will be hugely helpful to me because of the apostolic work that I do. I am approaching age 70. Many thanks.

Megan, while technically anyone can learn the techniques of natural methods of family planning, or NFP, it works best between married couples because one thing NFP requires is commitment. Out of this commitment grows communication, understanding, and perhaps most shockingly, more intimacy. Not to say that STDs are not a problem in married relationships (because of past mistakes), but they tend not to be because couples are monogamous and chaste, meaning pure (not celibate as some people think).
