I get frustrated with “destination weddings” for the reasons that a) they cost the guests a lot more time and money, b) they seem rather self-centered. Not everyone has unlimited vacation time to blow on someone else’s agenda. So I appreciate the reminder here to be considerate and make a wedding easier on guests. Absolutely.

But I never complain about lots of weddings for GenXers. Every single time I hear of one, I say, “praise God! One more couple to help loosen the logjam for the rest of us.” GenXers have so many obstacles against marrying well and forever, that I have to consider each good match a sign of God’s coming blessing for the rest of us who are still waiting. Bring it on!

My wife’s friend (in Baltimore) was invited to her friend’s wedding in HAWAII! Needless to say, she had to decline due to the time restraint and the cost of the ticket (which was over $1,000 for her, not to mention doubling the fee to bring her husband along.)

I understand your frustration Christine but perhaps it has more to do with the fact that you live in Iowa and everyone else live on the coasts. I’ve been to Iowa City and to quote Kramer:

“I spent a month there one night.”

We attended my daughter’s wedding last weekend in Colorado – it was a small affair – with a lot of thought to the people attending and the reality of a lifelong commitment – it honored the guests attending and was a joy – everything was simple and very tasteful. My daughter and son-in-law taught me a lot about the true meaning of their union.

I agree, that if it is a financial burden to attend a wedding then it is better to say we will be unable to attend. You could still buy a gift, even if you dont go to the event. Or offer up a prayer for their new family. At one point I was really hurting financially, and my best friend from high school was getting married. After I told him, he bought me a plane ticket to new jersey, and I was able to share that special day with him and his family. God will make a way even if you don’t believe you can afford to attend. It was my first trip to new york and new jersey and I really loved seeing him with his wife. It had been years since we were together, since I am in california, and he works in manhattan now.

Fantastic! Someone needed to say this. I think we (the guests and bride/groom as well) become too fixated on the food, the presents and having the ‘perfect wedding’. We need to focus more on how to make a one day celebration into a lifetime of love and commitment.

At first, I wanted to say “Oh boo-hoo, your life is so hard, you have to go and celebrate too many weddings!.” But then, I saw the very heartfelt religious message towards the end and thought you were really onto something. Thanks for the insights.
