We decided to have a short engagement, which left only enough time to put together the essentials of the wedding. I wore my mother's wedding dress, we bought our flowers in bulk and constructed all the bouquets and arrangements ourselves, a friend made our cake and another friend took photos.Instead of having a fancy designer wedding, we focused on what was really meaningful to us. We wrote the entire wedding liturgy ourselves, using the standard prayers but changing elements that were theologically inappropriate (exclusively masculine language describing God, for example) and making sure that the various parts of the Mass remained true to our tradition while also reflecting what we think are the best parts of our faith. I couldn't try it on, but if I didn't fit or I didn't like it I couldn't have just bought another one and still been ahead of buying one at a bridal shop.
