thanks for your thoughtful response! I did decide to send him to a very "cultural" Hebrew program in our neighborhood that is more about tradition and fun (twister in Hebrew) than about rigid learning...still I struggle with it ...Finding a temple that's convenient and a match is an issue

There is no replacement for Faith in human life and I applaud your wanting to share your heritage with your son. I am a cradle Catholic, product of twelve years of Catholic education, and I didn’t get really meaningful Religious Education and Faith Formation until my junior year in high school. It created a monster! I now hold a Doctor of Ministry degree and am a lay ecclesial minister. Spiritually impoverished children will be lost! don’t let this happen to your son. However, don’t force it. Find a reformed community where you can study together and share the excitement of your new religious literacy. Perhaps Temple Emanuel in Manhattan. Your joy will be contagious. Shalom and happy journey!

Even good Catholics struggle with their child's resistance towards being taught the tenets of faith. No worries though! One day he'll thank YOU for this. Why not ask the rabbi if he can give both of you lessons in Hebrew and you can have the bat mitzvah you never had?!
