What makes "Kings" work is its modern setting. If it were a period piece, it might not have been as accessible to everyday viewers. With the modern setting, we can see anew the stories from the books of Samuel and Kings - to better understand them and their context.

"Kings" is brilliantly written (er, adapted), but it is also wonderfully shot. The cinematography is stunning - incredibly artful without being too fancy. It punctuates the action and the dialogue well.

The references to the biblical story are good, but not overdone - which might alienate viewers not familiar with the original source material. Kudos to Michael Green for a truly great work of television!
