The Maid and The Medicine Cabinet

Moral Dilemma #7: A Wrinkle

Introduction:

Now we’d like to complicate Brianna’s dilemma just a bit more by telling you what happened next…

THE WRINKLE

Brianna couldn’t think straight with her pounding migraine headache. She laid down for a while on her bed and tried to go to sleep. After another hour of pain, she finally decided to call her doctor.

Maybe it was just her imagination, but she could’ve sworn that she detected a note of suspicion in the doctor’s voice when she tried to explain what had happened. The doctor asked Brianna a number of pointed questions about the turn of events that enabled her bottle of Vicodin to disappear. After a few minutes he told her that he would write another prescription for her, but that she had to be extremely careful about where she put it in her house and who had access to it.

She yanked the bottle off the shelf and opened it quickly. Her heart sank when she saw that the bottle she had never even used had slightly less than half of the pills remaining.”

Brianna agreed and thanked him for his understanding. As soon as she hung up the phone she headed out to pick up the new bottle.

Blur

The rest of the day was a blur of exhaustion, headache and sleep. Later in the week, with all the congratulatory phone calls on her engagement and the planning for the wedding that was only four months away, it soon slipped her mind to do anything at all about it.

Four weeks later, Brianna was feeling overwhelmed with all that she had to do. The past few weeks had been a blizzard of activity and she barely had a moment to rest. When she dropped down onto her bed to sleep that night, she realized that she hadn’t spent an evening at home since she’d celebrated the engagement with her friends.

What’s The Right Thing To Do Now?

Click HERE to take the quiz:

  • This might just be the tip of the iceberg as far as stealing is concerned. Fire Anna the next morning and warn the neighbors who also use Anna about what had happened?
  • Confront Anna immediately with the half-empty bottle and try to get the truth?
  • Have someone help Brianna write a note in Spanish asking Anna to please come talk to her, assuring her that she can help with anything medical (insurance, Doctors etc). When it’s written she should place it in the Vicodin bottle for Anna to find the next time she takes it?
  • Take all the pills out of the bottle and put them in her locked desk drawer?
  • Do nothing. The wedding is only a few months away. After that she and her husband will most likely find a new place to live and she can let Anna go without any drama?

None of these sound right to you? Want to qualify one of the above answers? What do you think Brianna should do now?

Just as she was drifting off to sleep she could feel the beginning of a migraine headache coming on. She couldn’t afford not to sleep so Brianna got up to get her medicine. She opened the medicine chest and saw the bottle of Vicodin sitting out in plain sight on the top shelf despite the fact that she had practically buried it behind some aspirin bottles and pepto

bismol on the bottom. She yanked the bottle off the shelf and opened it quickly. Her heart sank when she saw that the bottle she had never even used had slightly less than half of the pills remaining.

She knew instantly that it could only have been Anna who took the pills. She was angry at herself for having trusted and cared for Anna in the first place and distressed by the position she was now in. Why would Anna take her pills? Nothing of any value had ever been taken from the apartment. She had really cared for Anna ever since they’d met. She now felt betrayed and sad. This all made no sense.

Did she need to fire her immediately? Should she find someone who could translate for her and confront Anna about it and try to get a straight answer?

Time for you to decide again. What’s the right thing for Brianna to do now?
