People are understandably offended by this little froggy-on-a-cross. I really think that, artistic as this may be, you should think about whether or not you offend people with your work and if the artistics good is worth the offense that will come of it. Sometimes it can be: I think, for example, Satanic Verses or The Last Temptation of Christ, or a lot of those works are, mostly because they become, essentially, reflections on what it means to have (and lose) faith. I’m not sure what this piece means or what it gives…
A sculpture of a crucified green frog has the Pope seeing red.
Pope Benedict called the wooden sculpture, “Zuerst die Füsse,” which hangs in the Museion museum in Northern Italy, blasphemous. The work by the late German artist Martin Kippenberger features a frog holding a beer mug and an egg, its tongue lolling out, nailed to the cross like Jesus Christ.
The museum’s board met Thursday to decide on whether to take down the controversial piece of art, Reuters reported. They voted to keep the sculpture on display.
Museum officials had previously defended the piece, stating the artist considered it “a self-portrait illustrating human angst.”
